Farm Health Planning at the Dairy Event and Livestock Show Farmers and vets team up to address common issues on platform
22 August 2011
Farmers and their vets will be teaming up to address some of the most common issues found among dairy and beef herds at the new look Farm Health Planning seminars to be staged at the Dairy Event and Livestock Show by its organiser the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers at The NEC, Birmingham on Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 September.
The Farm Health Planning (FHP) seminars which will examine milk fever, fertility, lameness, Johne’s, mastitis and BVD, are being managed by the Cattle Health and Welfare Group, and chaired by British Cattle Veterinary Association members. They will be staged in an open discussion area with visitor seating, enclosed by glass panels and located in the Animal Health Zone. The farmer will introduce each seminar and with his vet explain how they are working together to solve a particular challenge. Visitors will be encouraged to participate in the sessions using voting keypads.
“We’re taking a completely new approach to the FHP seminars which are returning to the event for the fourth consecutive year,” explains FHP co-ordinator, Brian Lindsay. “Each will examine one of the challenging health issues experienced by virtually every dairy or beef herd, and how they have been addressed by individual farmers working in partnership with their vet.
“The opportunity to hear first hand from both farmers and their vets about how they are meeting these challenges head on, using a team approach to implement strategies for the farm’s unique circumstances will, I am sure, provide every attending farmer valuable food for thought. The challenge will then be what will they do with this food for thought and how will they act when they return to their own farm.”
