Strong interest in dairy cattle classes at Dairy Event and Livestock Show

Over 220 cattle have been entered for the competitive classes at this year’s Dairy Event and Livestock Show to be held at its new venue, The NEC, Birmingham on Tuesday 7 September, the first of the two day event organized by the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers.

“Exhibitor interest and enthusiasm is outstanding, for our first year at the NEC says RABDF chief executive, Nick Everington. “Seven breeds of cattle will be competing for prestigious silverware and attractive prize money, thanks to cattle sponsor, Merial Animal Health through its Eprinex and Igenity brands which has put up the prize money, including £1,000 for the supreme championship.”

Judging on an inspection only format, will take place throughout Tuesday, culminating with the supreme champion in the afternoon. The judging will take place in the Livestock Hall, a two acre single span building accommodating all the livestock and the clipping area with purpose built wash down and milking facilities adjacent.

Brian Miller of Bridgwater, Somerset will judge the Holstein section, while Joe Archer, Ashbourne, Derbyshire will do the honours in the British Friesian ring; John Watson, Stranraer, Wigtownshire will judge the Ayrshires; Graham Bell, Tarporley, Cheshire the Dairy Shorthorns; Chris Candy, Congleton, Cheshire the Brown Swiss and Charles Reader, Brackley, Northants the Jerseys.
For all interbreed competitions, the breed judges will act together as a judging panel.

The awards will be presented to the winners by RABDF president, John Alvis on Tuesday afternoon at approximately 3.30pm

The event will also host the National Federation of Young Farmers Clubs’ National Stockman and Young Stock Judge of the Year competitions on Wednesday 8 September.
