NEW TEAT DISINFECTANT DELIVERY SYSTEM

A novel new teat disinfectant system which will make it easier for farmers to achieve outstanding teat coverage including those using thickened teat disinfectants will be unveiled at the Dairy Event and Livestock Show by dairy hygiene specialists Diversey Ltd.

The new Deosan Teat Disinfection system is a multi-application and multi-disinfectant system. It can apply disinfectant as a spray, dip or foaming dip and can handle the full range of disinfectants including thickened products.

“Dairy farmers have a wide range of products and application methods available for pre and post milking disinfection,” explains Diversey Ltd Field Technical Manager Alison Cox. “All these systems have a common objective of applying disinfectant evenly and comprehensively across the teat but until now many application methods have restricted the choice of disinfectant.”

Powered by compressed air from a pressure as low as 2.5 bar depending on the product being used, the Deosan Teat Disinfection system can be quickly and easily installed. The ergonomically designed gun provides a consistent and even spray, but can be easily adapted to turn it from a sprayer into an automatically filling dip cup.

“This is a huge advantage to farmers who currently use traditional dip cups with thickened products. Refilling the cup by squeezing the reservoir is difficult and there have been reports of repetitive strain injuries when using thickened dips. With the new system, refilling the dip cup involves just pressing the trigger.”

For convenience the system is fed direct from the chemical drum and the drum can be remote from the unit to help keep the dairy uncluttered. As the system has few working parts it is very reliable and easy to maintain.

The system has been trialled at numerous sites across the UK including the Institute for Animal Health at Compton where 18 guns have been running off a single unit.

“The system is flexible and can be fitted to any sized parlour although the number of units will depend on the size and configuration of the specific parlour.

“Feedback confirms the system is easy to use and delivers an even application of disinfectant with none of the draw backs reported when using thickened disinfectants in dipping systems, “Ms Cox concludes.

The typical price for the system is from £500 (+VAT) depending on the configuration of the parlour.
